Thesecondopinion was founded in 1969 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to assist the Bay Area medical community in the treatment of cancer patients. It was established by prominent Bay Area physicians who recognized a gap in clinical cancer services and sought to fill it by bringing together volunteer medical experts to provide second-opinion panels for cancer patients.

For more than five decades, thesecondopinion has provided FREE, comprehensive second opinions to adults in California diagnosed with cancer. Our mission is to ensure that every cancer patient—regardless of income, insurance status, or background—has access to the clarity and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their treatment.
We use a multidisciplinary panel model, where each patient’s case is reviewed by up to seven volunteer physicians who are board-certified in the medical specialties required for that individual’s diagnosis. Panels typically include a radiologist, pathologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgical sub-specialists as needed. Patients and their family members participate in the discussion, asking questions and receiving unbiased, evidence-based recommendations on treatment options, symptom management, supportive care, or further testing. Patients consistently leave feeling empowered and informed, knowing they are pursuing the best possible course of action for their care.
In 2024, thesecondopinion provided 219 free second opinions, reviewing 19 types of cancer. Our patient population reflects our strong commitment to equity and access:

- 69% of patients had a combined household income of $50,000 or less

- 64% were disabled, retired, or unemployed

- 37% identified as minorities

While thesecondopinion welcomes all who seek assistance, our primary focus remains on serving vulnerable populations—individuals with modest incomes, those who are uninsured or underinsured, older adults, and people who face language or educational barriers. We offer translation services to ensure equitable access and understanding for all patients.

Through the dedication of our volunteer physicians and supporters, thesecondopinion continues to bridge a critical gap in cancer care—bringing expertise, compassion, and clarity to those who need it most.
